As we near the end of the 2020-2021 season and already begin looking ahead to the 2021-2022 season starting in July, we face the urgent need of replacing our workhorse Honda ATV which we depend on for patrolling our beach.
Without the ability to patrol the beach, there cannot be a hatchery. There cannot be baby turtle releases. Maybe there could not be a camp at all.
We added a 2nd patrol this last season, which enabled us to rescue many more nests by beating out poachers (human and dog) and tides. But that took quite a toll on our ATV. We estimate she put in about 16,000km patrolling the beach this season alone. For some perspective, that is the equivalent of driving her to Anchorage, Alaska…and back!
In addition to the incredible distance patrolled this season, the last three seasons total another estimated 30,000km. This poor girl is done and breaking down at least once a week as this season winds down.
We received fantastic news in recent days when a very generous couple offered to help fund our ATV fund drive with a matching $5,000USD donation. Al aproximarse el final de la temporada 2020-2021, y empezar a planear la temporada 2021-2022 que inicia en julio, nos enfrentamos a la urgente necesidad de reemplazar nuestro vehículo Honda del cual dependemos para patrullar la playa.
Sin la posibilidad de patrullar las playas, no puede haber corral de incubación ni liberación de tortugas. Quizá ni el campamento pudiese existir.
Durante la temporada que termina, realizamos dos recorridos por noche, lo cual nos permitió ganarles a los saqueadores, los depredadores, a las mareas altas y de ese modo rescatar más nidadas de tortuga marina. El problema es que forzamos mucho a nuestra cuatrimoto ya que recorrimos un aproximado de 16,000 kilómetros solo en ésta temporada, lo que equivale a la distancia de Zihuatanejo a Anchorage Alaska ida y vuelta.
Esa distancia aunada a los 30,000 kilómetros que se recorrieron durante las tres temporadas anteriores ha ocasionado que la pobre chica está cansada y últimamente se nos descompone casi cada semana.
En días pasados recibimos una gran noticia de una muy generosa pareja de extranjeros quienes ofrecieron donar los primeros $5,000 USD para la compra de un vehículo nuevo siempre y cuando consigamos reunir otros $5,000. Esta es una muy buena oportunidad de aumentar sus donaciones y ayudarnos a continuar el trabajo de conservación de tortugas marinas que ustedes generosamente apoyan
